Like so many top craft breweries, Scottish artisanal beer producer Tempest Brewing’s story starts in a garage as a small brewery with big ideas. And like every craft brewery, their goal was to brew exciting beers not found in their home country of Scotland.

After searching for the perfect location, the brewery brewed its very first batch of beer in 2010 with its flagship brew the celebrated Long White Cloud, a beer that would become a symbol of the brewery’s commitment to creativity and quality.

The beer, and the brewery were an immediate success, and demand was big from the word go. In order to keep up with demand, Tempest moved from its original home in Kelso to nearby Tweedbank in 2015. The new brewery would allow the young brewery to increase production to 30hl per year, and really give flight to its creativity and release its full potential. Despite this substantial increase in capacity, Tempest Brewing remain obsessed with quality, creativity and ingenuity.

The brewery has its roots in New Zealand, but also embraces traditional Scottish beer styles like Scotch Ale and Wee Heavy. Like NZ the Scottish climate favours stronger, more substantial brews for a cold, wet climate. Scottish beers are often darker, sweeter brews with a less full-on hops profile than those brewed south of the border, and this is something that Tempest has mastered and developed both in natural and barrel aged versions of beer styles like The Old Fashioned – a beer inspired by the classic cocktail – or All the Leaves Are Brown, an Imperial Brown Ale available in natural and BA versions.

But it’s not just heavy beers – Tempest are a versatile brewery with a knack for light American Pale Ale, and Sour Ales like Drop Kick Me Jesus. Tempest Brewing Company have already come a long way, and one thing is for sure,  that talent is going to take them a lot further still.
