The Rodenbach brewery has a long and rich brewing history. It was established in 1820 by four brothers. It was Eugène Robenbach, one of their descendants, who brought the secrets of ageing in oak barrels from England. Owned by the Palm Jan Toyes brewery since 1998, they have worked to perpetuate this unique style of Belgian beer.
The beer we drink today is still brewed in traditional barrels which are watertight thanks to reeds, some of which are over 150 years old! This blended beer is mainly composed of young beer (¾) and beer aged for two years in a barrel.
It has a brown colour with ruby tints and develops a unique aromatic palate. The complex bouquet has an underlying bittersweet nature, blending recognisable touches of fruit and plums with woody, sharp and malty hints. This beer's unique flavours are the result of barrel ageing and the yeast ingredient, the same since the beginning.
This beer is an invitation to a taste sensation. And if you visit the Belgian coast, try this Rouge des Flandres with a plate of small grey shrimps!
