Westmalle Double is a Belgian beer brewed at the Trappist Abbey of N.D de la Trappe du Sacré Cœur.

It is a mahogany-coloured dark ale which develops an abundant and lingering beige head in the glass. This colouring is due to the double dose of malt used to brew this Westmalle. A powerful, malty aroma escapes from the glass with very flowery scents, and tones of caramelized alcohol and yeast.

The delicacy is obvious on the palate. Notes of liquorice, subtly burnt caramel, a slight toastiness and a first-rate lingering, dry bitterness are immediately noticeable. Malty flavours linger on the palate. This is a very sophisticated, delicate beer.

A good vintage Trappist, a little less forceful than its fellow dark ales, Westvleteren or Rochfort, but the quality is undeniable! The Westmalle Dubbel comes from the second Belgian Trappist brewery.

For the tasting, it is advisable to let the beer rest a little beforehand, then carefully pour the liquid into a Westmalle chalice glass leaving the yeast deposit behind in the bottle.
