Beery Christmas Jour 10 : Crew Republic Bavarian Psycho
Crew Republic, the German brewery that breaks the codes
The craft beer revolution
If you are familiar with German beer, you should know that it is brewed under the German purity law called Reinheitsgebot, which is at the same time one of the oldest European food decrees. Originating in Bavaria and dating back to 1516, it requires breweries to use only the primary ingredients for brewing beer, namely malt, water and hops. Yeast is not on the list, even though it should be since it was not really known at the time. 500 years later, the German brewery Crew Republic decides to break this law by announcing that they want to revolutionize the boring world of German beer. Not cool for tradition, but cool for hop lovers! At the origin, there is Mario and Timm, two buddies fresh out of school who will found their brewery Crew Republic in spring 2011, in a shared apartment in the district of Glockenbach in Munich. Their goal is to brew original, creative and above all full-flavored beers.
Crew Republic goes from strength to strength
Despite many attempts to demotivate them by the people around them, our brewer friends kept their heads down and remained focused on their goals. After many recipes were created and many brews were made, the first beer of the Crew Republic brewery was born under the name of Foundation 11, a Pale Ale that still delights hop lovers. Afterwards, they were able to find a bigger place to brew more, but they were unable to set up their own place because nobody really believed in them.
With a lot of perseverance, the community continued to grow with the demand getting bigger and bigger, so 2012 marked the arrival of their first hop bomb, the Drunken Sailor IPA. This was followed by many others like the Imperial Stout Roundhouse Kick or the DIPA 7:45 Escalation. As you can imagine, brewing all of this will require a real infrastructure, which will come in 2015 when Crew Republic finally has its own brewery! On top of that, you can even visit them since 2017 and grab a cold beer right in their taproom. Tasting a craft beer from Crew Republic means you can be sure to enjoy a great tasting craft that blends passion with the finest ingredients. So it's no surprise to find it in our 10th annual Beery Christmas advent calendar with Bavarian Psycho.
Crew Republic - Bavarian Psycho
When white beer meets hops, it gives Bavarian Psycho, a dry-hopped wheat beer, very light, marked by a pronounced hazy color. Underneath its yellow color and airy white foam, there are intense wheat aromas, mixed with fresh hop and citrus notes. It is especially in the mouth that the whole thing wakes up, with an intensity carried on citrus fruits, in a very well balanced whole. The dry and light body combines with crisp hops that will quench your thirst. The moderate carbonation will make the taste buds wriggle just right. Far from being a usual weisse, it revisits the style by its use of aromatic hops, which surprises us to find touches of pineapple and mango, whereas we are more used to a hint of spices and herbs. A delicate bitterness comes at the end of the mouth, with a length on pineapple and citrus fruits.
This beer clearly revisits the style, to be enjoyed at a temperature of 6 to 8°C with seafood.
