Beery Christmas Jour 11 : Brew By Numbers 05 IPA Azacca & Simcoe
Brew By Numbers, from the basement to the light
The story of Brew By Numbers begins in 2010, when Tom and Dave met during a hiking tour in Asia. Traveling through China, Laos and the Vietnamese islands, they became friends and later, started a common project. In August 2011, our two friends decided to open their microbrewery, trying to brew in a friend's basement in Southwark Bridge Road, in the center of London. They read books, crafted brewing kits, asked everyone for advice, did a lot of research online and even spent some free time in breweries to see how things were done.
In their early days, they experimented with brewing to find compositions that blend well together, giving their brews numbers, hence their current name Brew By Numbers. In 2012, they released the Hoppy Saison beer, which would be very popular and become the 01/01. It will be its atypical profile that cannot be found anywhere else, that will launch the adventure of this very young British brewery.
In November 2012, BBN receives the authorization to sell its beers and will organize its launch party on December 1st at The Craft Beer Co. in Clerkenwell. Ten years later, in 2022, Brew By Numbers has offered over 350 SKUs under a wide range of styles. From the modern saison to the hoppiest, all the way to the IPA or the very dark stout, their beers are often defined as balanced and bold. It's not for nothing that they are listed in the Ratebeer ranking of the 100 best breweries in the world.
Tasting of the BBN°05 IPA
An IPA with Azacca and Simcoe hops, it's going to smell like fruit ! You don't really need to go into what an IPA is now, but you know it will be relatively bitter and fruity. The use of Azacca hops will bring aroma and bitterness, with very fruity notes of citrus, tropical fruit, spicy mango, tangerine, pine and pineapple. Simcoe, on the other hand, will also give bitterness, with notes of pine, passion fruit, grapefruit and berries. When poured into a glass, BBN°05 IPA reveals a hazy yellow color with a fine white foam. This hazy side can be justified by the fact that the beer was brewed with oats, which gives it a veil but also a creamier texture appreciable in mouth.
As mentionned above, the Azacca and Simcoe hops will highlight certain aromas, and we will find pine, wood, dank, tropical fruits, citrus, tangerine, passion fruit, pineapple, bergamot or grapefruit. It is strong in aromatic and also resinous! You can find herbaceous flavors, with pineapple, white pepper, mango and bergamot, with a bitterness in the end that is rather dry. This beer should be enjoyed at a temperature of 6°C with Thai food.
