Beery Christmas Jour 15 : Adnams Flat White Porter
Adnams, a 150 year old brewery
Adnams is much more than an English brewery, it is a true institution that has been offering its experience for 150 years! Founded by George and Ernest Adnams in 1872 in Southwold, in the English county of Suffolk, it still bears this name famous throughout the country. For the record, not really fun for him, George joined the cavalry a few years later in Africa and was eaten by a crocodile. Known and recognized as brewers, distillers, wine merchants, retailers or hoteliers, they are far from stopping only at brewing beer. Working on many fronts, they are the originators of high-end spirits and even collaborate with talented producers to offer the best wines in the world. This pursuit of perfection is the hallmark of Adnams, which you can also find in their inns, hotels, stores and pubs. Located on the Southwold coast, the brewery enjoys an incredible lifestyle, drawing inspiration from the open sea and the crashing waves.
Independent, it is a microbrewery that has been able to grow and take advantage of this status to have no constraints in innovation, while putting a point of honor on the conservation of the ecosystem. If Adnams is a brewery that already has experience, it never stops learning and does not rest on its achievements, always seeking to explore and grow in order to have the best working methods and reduce its impact on the environment. For this last point, you should know that the brewery uses only local ingredients, since they say that's what's best and were able to brew the first carbon neutral beer in the UK, East Green. Now that you know a bit more about the English brewery, you can understand why they joined the Beery Christmas adventure, for the tenth edition of our famous advent calendar. For the occasion, they've come up with a beer that goes by the name of Flat White Porter, a black beer that is greedy and full of flavor.
Adnams Porter in the Beery Christmas
The origins of the Porter style
Porter is a black beer! This particular style comes from 18th century England, where maltsters invented a new kind of malt by simply roasting it more or less strongly. Coupled with brewing techniques, this new beer is called "Entire". Very quickly, this malt became a must, especially for London dockers and porters. Why did this happen? Because at the time, the dockers who worked at the transport of the cargoes arriving by boat in the docks were called in English "Ticket Porter". To recognize them easily, they had a cross-shaped badge on their uniforms. They had the arduous job of carrying all the goods from one place to another and usually did not have time to eat. As such, they often stopped at an English pub to refuel with a good beer and make it through the day. It was so popular, appreciated and consumed that the name "Entire" was replaced by "Porter" in honor of its consumers.
What about Adnams Flat White Porter?
It doesn't come as a surprise that Adnams Flat White Porter is a black beer with an opaque black color and a fine, persistent and creamy beige finish. It puts the whole package on roasted malts with coffee notes that will incense your nose. It is very powerful, reminding of a black coffee in the morning. The most greedy could however find a hint of chocolate. As usual, the tasting is free to interpretation! In the mouth, we find strong flavors, as well as a very gripping bitterness that is not usually found in this style. In terms of flavors, we find logically coffee, as well as chocolate and roasted malt with a resinous touch that hangs on the palate. Its body worthy of a velvet has a low carbonation for a long and dry finish that is still accompanied by notes of coffee with a bitter and herbaceous touch. It should be enjoyed at a temperature of 10°C with a caramel dessert cream. Simple. Efficient.
