Beery Christmas Jour 21 : Lowlander - Hazy IPA
The history of the Dutch brewery Lowlander
The Lowlanders
"The Netherlands" or "Pays-Bas" is a name that speaks for itself and can literally be transformed into "Low Lands" because their territory is under the sea level. Long ago, pioneer sailors, the lowlanders, crossed the globe to trade resources from all over the world. That's where the idea for Lowlander Brewery came from. Today, Lowlander Brewery explores and transcends herbs, spices and fruits to create unique, natural beers and even simmers them to create blends that will be remembered.
The founder
Lowlander was founded by Frederik Kampman, a man who once worked in a gin distillery in the UK and was amazed at what could be achieved by distilling botanicals to create cocktails. After several years, he wondered what could be achieved by brewing these plants with strong values, transparency and open-mindedness. The Lowlander brewery gets straight to the point, largely preferring simplicity to complexity. It mixes a touch of ingenuity with the power of nature to create infinite possibilities. We've been telling you for a long time, beer has no limits and we're going to prove it with Lowlander's Hazy I.P.A. in this tenth edition of Beery Christmas.
Lowlander - HAZY IPA
Eco-friendly beers
For those who love plants, tea and herbaceous delicacies, this brewery will please you. Eager to protect the planet and to offer good beers, it donates 1% of its revenues to an organization for the protection of the planet called 1% for the Planet. This contributes to causes that are dear to her, such as the fight against global warming, the preservation of wildlife and the conservation of biodiversity. In the same way that when you taste a Trappist beer and part of the money you pay goes to restore monasteries, here you participate in the preservation of the planet. As the brewery says: "Drink Beer. Save the planet". What's cool is that this year's Beery Christmas is going to participate in all of that with Lowlander's Hazy IPA.
From toucan to passion fruit
From the get-go, we've been telling you about fruit, herbs and other aromatic blends, but so what's in this famous Hazy IPA? If there is a toucan on the label, don't worry, the animal will not be in the bottle and fortunately. Look a little closer and you'll see the passion fruit in its beak, and that's right in the bottle. If the tropical bird is enjoying these sweet and tart berries, you soon will too. Brewed with passion fruit and mango, Hazy I.P.A., also known as New England India Pale Ale (NEIPA) or Juicy I.P.A. is a fresh, juicy beer that's 6% alcohol. While today's beers usually use hops from around the world to get fruity flavors in their beers, Lowlander uses real fruit and that makes a huge difference from other breweries.
When poured into a glass, it reveals a hazy yellow color with a thin white foam. There are very intense aromas of citrus and tropical fruits like mango and tropical fruits. On the palate, there are sweet flavors, without the oppressive bitterness that can be found in the IPA style. As you'd expect, the flavors are very fruity with a heavy emphasis on the tropical. The beer is lulled by a perfect balance of tangy passion fruit and sweet mango which will appeal to palates looking for a brewing experience.
It should be enjoyed at a temperature of 4 to 6°C with small shrimps or cottage cheese.
