Beery Christmas Day 8: Founders Breakfast Stout
Founders Breakfast Stout
Another highly popular Beery Christmas alumnus, Founders Brewing Company's story unfolds over more than 20 years, Michigan's Founders Brewing is a heart-warming, against-the-odds success story. Like so many Craft Brewers, Founders founders - the founders of Founders, that is - Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers quit their jobs to chase the dream of professional brewing. However, it wasn't all plain-sailing!
Despite brewing quality though - by their own admission – uninspiring Craft Beer, they found supply exceeded demand and, faced with a choice of rethinking their business model or shutting up shop, they decided to go back to basics.
They set about producing beer that they wanted to drink – gutsy, ballsy, complex and in-your-face brews – a move that would turn the company's fortunes around and make them the world-renowned, award-winning brewery we know today, occupying a place in Ratebeer's Top 100 breweries worldwide for an incredible 8 years running!
The gamble paid off, as today the brewery regularly features in lists of the world's top Craft Breweries. And now it has the ultimate accolade – the honour of being 2017's final Beery Christmas beer before the big day!
Stout for Breakfast?
Founders have built a reputation for sumptuous, velvety Stouts and Porters and Breakfast Stout is up there with the best of 'em. A big hit with Saveur Bière and HOPT customers for some years now, Founders's Breakfast Stout is a slick, velvety Double Chocolate Coffee Oatmeal Stout to take on any competition.
Brewed with finest quality, locally-sourced coffee, this jet-black, silky-smooth Stout is ridiculously rich, with momentous espresso coffee and huge bitter chocolate notes that mix effortlessly with bitter dark malt and creamy sweet oats that make this sumptuous beer a real gourmet coffee experience. If you love great coffee and awesome Stouts, then you’re going to love today’s beer!
Wake up and smell the Stout...
Rich, velvety Founder’s Breakfast Stout deserves to be served with big flavours, and a gourmet burger is a perfect starting point. Flame-grilled beef on artisanal buns, slathered in mustard, mayo stacked with with candied onions, sweet pickles and a slab of strong cheese – stilton or camembert is perfect – melted on top: what’s not to like?
It’s also awesome with pancakes or French toast dusted with sugar and topped with dairy vanilla ice cream for an awesome dessert (or breakfast – after all, what are Saturdays for?)
Step forward Oatmeal Stout!
So, what to tell you about Breakfast Stout? Well, it’s a style all its own, pioneered by the brewery of the day, Founders! As you know, your basic Stout is a deep black beer with a cream head, brewed with a generous quantity of dark-roast ‘patent’ malt. It’s bitter, it’s smooth, but it’s still not smooth enough for some.
Step forward Oatmeal Stout! As the name suggests, oatmeal stout is brewed with oatmeal. This grain usually reserved for making breakfast for old folk – hence the name Breakfast - but it also makes an excellent addition to Stout, to smooth out the rough edges and add a sweetness not found in classic Stout.
…then there’s Breakfast Stout the Founders way!
And if that’s not enough, then take an Oatmeal Stout and barrel age it in Bourbon casks à la Kentucky Breakfast Stout or Canadian maple syrup casks to go with pancakes!
