The Beer: Part of Crew Republic's experimental 'X' range, X Imperial Red Ale shows off a vibrant ruby-tinged amber body with a respectable off-white head. The generously malted bouquet is warm and inviting, with big toffee roast malts and fruity hops, coupled with subtle demerara sugar character.
On the palate, the flavour profile slowly reveals itself, unveiling seductively thick caramel malts, with pumpernickel bread and a background of warm earthy, spicy, fruity hops.
All set in a slick, medium-bodied ensemble, this big, bold adventure finishes on a spicy melon and pine New World hops note that hints at tannic orange zest and fresh leafy foliage.
The brewery: Crew Republic was founded in the German city of Munich back in 2011 by Mario and Timm, two young businessmen with a dream – brewing great beer! Having quit their day-jobs, they set about bringing great Craft Beer to Germany one brew at a time.
Testament to their skill and dedication, Crew Republic's self-confessed perfectionists pride themselves on only brewing beers they like, and only bottling recipes they think are 100% ready.
Further proof of their dedication is their promise to Craft Beer fans: a sanctuary for those who refuse to be satisfied by ordinary beer. Long live the Republic!
The style: Somewhat hard to define, Red Ale borrows from a variety of styles, though it is probably most closely related to a classic IPA or Pale Ale. The most striking characteristic is the colour, which ranges from deep amber to full-on crimson.
According to some sources, the style is best described as 'a happy medium' – a satisfying blend of medium body, medium malts, medium hops - that sticks firmly with the middle-ground with no rough edges and no extreme hopping. This insistence on moderation results in a harmonious, easy-drinking character that is great anytime.
Food pairings: Thanks to Red Ale's easy-going character, it is a highly versatile style that can be paired with a wide range of foods, including creamy goats cheese, mozzarella - particularly tiny ciliegine, or cream-filled burrata. \nThe moderate malt and measured hops also make a fine partner for spicy foods, and our favourite pairing for X Red Ale is a spicy, aromatic Thai green curry with shrimps, where elegant the mix of chilli and lemongrass really make this beer jump!
